City Tour Hof - Night Watchman Walk

You will be transported back in time before the great Hof city fire of 1823, listening to the stories of the Hof night watchman. Whenever the tower clock struck the hour, the night watchman would signal with his horn and announce the hour – singing a different song each time.

The citizens could rest easy knowing the night watchman was keeping an eye on all dangers. But the hour song was not his only task: he had to watch for thieves in the streets, mediate between a fire and the bell ringer of St. Michael's, and light the pitch pans. Only when everything was in order could he extinguish them at midnight and continue his rounds – for the safety of the Hof citizens.

Our Hof night watchman will share with you his duties, the incidents, and the peculiarities of his work in Hof. The meeting point is the main portal of St. Michael's Church, Maxplatz, 95028 Hof.

Price: 8.00 Euro/person. Registration is required. City Tour Hof - Executioner Tour

Do you have a strong stomach? Join Hof's executioner Master Franz Schmidt for thrilling and unforgettable moments.

A historically grounded and vibrant journey through superstition, justice, and healing. Medieval history comes alive as the executioner shares tales of his unusual craft: where once the pyres burned, where torturous interrogations took place, where wrongdoers stood in the stocks, and where the imperial blood court convened – who better to tell these stories than one who was commanded by the law to carry out death and corporal punishments and even torture?

As an executioner, he was also a brothel keeper and dog fighter, cleaning sewers or disposing of the bodies of dead people and animal carcasses. Often, he had medical knowledge and acted as a healer. The profession of executioner was considered 'dishonorable'; he lived in isolation and was shunned by the people.

Today, Master Franz Schmidt can be found against a historical backdrop, taking you on his tour.
