When Words Turn into Weapons: I, the Darkness! at Theater Hof
On Monday, November 9, 2026, the orchestra rehearsal room of Theater Hof transforms into a concentrated resonance chamber for a staged reading on radicalization, manipulation, and democratic responsibility. With free admission, two characters confront each other in a psychological power struggle that extends far beyond the stage.
A Dark Conflict Between Student and Teacher
Tristan grows up in a household shaped by nationalist ideology, obedience, and harshness. His history teacher Enzo Embacher stands against him. From the educational conversation, a threatening confrontation develops in which convictions harden, dependencies arise, and language loses its enlightening power.
Benedict Friederich and Marco Stickel condense Carsten Degenhardt's namesake psychological thriller into the immediate encounter of these two characters. The art of acting thrives on the tension between voice, posture, and psychological shift: Every sentence can become an attack, every pause can mark a new position of power.
A Production About the Mechanisms of Radicalization
The dramaturgy focuses not only on political buzzwords but also on the processes behind them. What shapes a person into what they later become? How do imprinting, manipulation, and dependency work together? And at what point does ideological conviction tip into violence?
As a staged reading, the theatrical experience works with concentration instead of decor. The atmosphere of the theater arises from the presence of the performers, from the shift between closeness and distance, and from the acoustic precision of the spoken word. Thus, the orchestra rehearsal room becomes the inner stage of a conflict whose political dimension remains palpable at all times.
Part of the Cross-Media Project DARKNESS
I, the Darkness! is part of the cross-media overall work DARKNESS by Carsten Degenhardt. The project addresses radicalization, political seduction, and democratic responsibility. The short film Prologue of Darkness launched in 2025 at the 59th Hof Film Festival.
The staged reading also commemorates November 9 and reminds us that anti-Semitism, nationalism, and nationalist thinking are not closed chapters. The theater thus becomes a place of confrontation: not as a teaching piece with simple answers but as a disturbing encounter with the conditions under which people are ideologically shaped.
A Concentrated Stage Experience with Resonance
The performance lasts about 60 minutes and leads directly into a psychological abyss. An intense reading, a reduced production, and material that does not leave audience reactions to mere shock but leads back to personal and societal responsibility are expected.
Those who experience theater as a place for reflection, remembrance, and democratic debate will find an evening of particular urgency in Hof. Admission is free. This stage experience deserves attention because it sharpens the view of the present and raises the question of how an open society defends its values.
