The Berlin cult band KARAT celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2025. 50 years – that’s two generations and almost a lifetime. There are only a few bands of note that can look back on such a long history. Most of them – let’s be honest – have long become nostalgic cover bands of themselves. KARAT has taken a different, their own path: one of constant search, continuous movement, and self-reflection.
The Artists: Talent Meets Experience
In this five-decade-long process, there have been some breaks. Musicians who significantly shaped the band’s course and sound for years made way for new characters and ideas. A permanent rejuvenation process. Those celebrating the 50th band anniversary today come from different generations and offer a broad spectrum of life experiences. And yet, or rather: precisely because of this, the underlying idea has always remained young.
The Live Experience: Atmosphere and Acoustics
This unique band development as an open creative system is exemplified in the position of the frontman: Herbert Dreilich held this role for three decades. During this time, the band celebrated its greatest successes, and he essentially gave them a face. For the past two decades, his son has taken his place. He has silenced the skeptics and proven that he not only resembles his father externally but has also inherited his creative energy.
Musical Highlights
Over 50 years of KARAT are primarily about the numerous, great hits – now all established classics. But they fit wonderfully into the here and now because they are timeless in the truest sense: Here, the ashes of the fire are not worshipped, but its embers are carried forward. KARAT represents five decades of German-German music history.
